Iran’s rial hits record low as dollar tops 200,000 tomans
Shafaq News- Tehran
Iran’s currency fell to a record low on Sunday, with the US dollar crossing 200,000 tomans on the free market for the first time as Tehran braces for a new round of US sanctions.
One toman is equivalent to 10 Iranian rials.
The dollar reached 200,050 tomans in evening trading, while the euro climbed to a record 233,700 tomans, according to Iranian currency-tracking channels.
The latest fall extends a sharp depreciation in recent days. On Saturday, the dollar was trading at around 195,000 tomans, with Bonbast recording a selling rate of 195,400 tomans.
Pressure on the rial comes ahead of an expected US announcement of new sanctions on Monday. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said Washington plans to impose the “toughest sanctions in history” on Iran as part of an intensified economic pressure campaign.
