Iraqi PrimeMinister Ali al-Zaidi will follow his upcoming visit to the United States by atour including Iran, Turkiye, and Saudi Arabia, all of which share a borderwith Iraq.

Speaking to thenewspaper Asharq al-Awsat, al-Zaidi said that he had received numerousinvitations to visit countries including France, the UK, and Germany, but thatpriority would go to the three neighbors for “important joint work,” after theWashington visit.

An informedsource earlier told Shafaq News that al-Zaidi will use his upcoming visit tothe United States next week to discuss the release of one of Iraq's bankfinancial guarantees held, estimated at around $30 billion, alongside economicand investment files.

Iraq's Coordination Framework (CF) on Monday urged itssupporters to participate widely in the “funeral procession” of former Iranian SupremeLeader Ali Khamenei in Iraq.

The CF, in a statement, also expressed support for thegovernment's and judiciary's efforts to restore confidence in the politicalprocess, stressing the need to sustain anti-corruption measures, remove corruptand negligent officials from state institutions, and prevent the waste ofpublic funds.

On Sunday, Iraqi authorities launched an arrest campaign, “DawnCrackdown”, targeting political officials, lawmakers, and businessmen as partof a broader anti-corruption drive. During a Cabinet meeting, Prime MinisterAli Al-Zaidi described the operation as the "first phase" of widerefforts to recover public funds and instructed oversight bodies to receivereports of corruption and administrative misconduct in state institutions.

The Sunni National Political Council (NPC)* endorsed on Monday therecent wave of anti-corruption arrests, hailing the coordinated action amongIraq’s executive, legislative, and judicial institutions to recover publicfunds and strengthen oversight across state bodies.

In a statement, the Council underlined that anti-corruption efforts mustremain free from political selection or influence, calling for equalapplication of the law across all cases without exception.

“Efforts to pursue corruption should lead to firm legal action againstanyone found responsible for misusing public money or exploiting public officefor personal gain,” it added, describing the ongoing measures as a step towardstrengthening accountability and protecting state resources.

On Sunday, under directives from Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, Iraqlaunched a nationwide anti-corruption campaign dubbed the “Dawn Crackdown.” Asecurity source told Shafaq News that arrests exceeded 67 during the first 24hours, including the head of the Al-Azm Alliance, Muthanna al-Samarrai, who isalso a member of the NPC. Other informed sources indicated that the initialphase of the operation is expected to target more than 200 current and formerofficials, politicians, business owners, and other suspects.

*The National Political Council is a Sunni umbrella bloc formed afterthe 2025 parliamentary elections to unify positions, coordinate politicaldemands, and represent Sunni forces in negotiations with other major blocs. Itholds a total of 77 seats in parliament.

The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will arrive in Baghdad on Tuesday for an official visit to discuss regional developments and affirm that Iraqi territory must not be used to launch attacks on Gulf states.

A government source told Shafaq News that Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary-General of the GCC, will hold meetings with Iraqi officials to discuss the latest regional developments and to convey the Gulf states' support for Iraq across various fields.

The talks will address the need to keep Iraq out of the arena of war and to prevent Iraqi territory from being used to launch any attack on Gulf states, as occurred during the recent period, the source said.

In an interview with Sky News on Sunday, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said investigations regarding reports that attacks on Gulf states originated from Iraqi territory had found no evidence that strikes against Saudi Arabia were launched from Iraq, adding that the government had issued clear directives to prevent any future violations.

Iraq and Syriaagreed Monday to rehabilitate the oil pipeline linking the two countries and toestablish two joint committees to deepen bilateral cooperation, according to ajoint statement issued after talks between Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Husseinand his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, in Damascus.

The two sidesexamined mechanisms for transporting and transiting energy supplies, centeredon the project to rehabilitate the oil transport pipeline running from Iraq toSyria. They also agreed to form a joint committee covering energy, agriculture,water, transport, and border crossings “to advance cooperation and mutualinterests.”

Last December,a source told Shafaq News that Iraq and Syria reached a preliminary agreementto revive the Kirkuk–Baniyas oil pipeline, adding that a delegation led byIraq’s deputy oil minister, including SOMO Director General Ali Nizar, OilPipelines Company Director General Ali Abdul Karim, and other senior officials,visited Damascus to discuss mechanisms for restarting the pipeline withofficials from Syria’s Ministry of Oil and Mineral Resources.

The pipeline,built in 1952, runs roughly 800 kilometers from the Kirkuk oil fields innorthern Iraq to the Syrian Mediterranean port of Baniyas, with a capacity of300,000 barrels per day. The line has been out of operation since 2003, when itwas damaged during the US-led invasion of Iraq.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said on Monday his government will convene a National Sovereignty Conference by the end of the year to cement the state's exclusive control over arms, while aiming to complete the disarmament of factions by September 30.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, al-Zaidi noted the conference would formally establish that only the state and its security forces have the authority to bear arms. "There will be no armed groups outside the framework of the state."

The September 30 deadline for disarmament coincides with the scheduled withdrawal of US troops from Iraq under a bilateral security agreement between Baghdad and Washington.

Mukhtar al-Moussawi, of the Badr bloc led by Hadi al-Amiri, told Shafaq News that the group fully supports Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's efforts to recover public funds, alleging that some corruption suspects possessed the financial resources to incite unrest, adding that Iraq was coordinating with other countries, including neighboring states, to extradite wanted suspects and recover public funds allegedly transferred abroad.

Omar al-Karawi, headof Diyala Provincial Council, said Monday that the arrest of his brother,Deputy Mudhar al-Karawi, cannot be separated from his political stances,expressing confidence in Iraqi judicial processes to clarify the circumstancesof the arrest.

“Mudhar al-Karawimaintained clear and consistent positions defending the people of Diyala,particularly in the Hamrin Basin,” his brother said, adding that he rejectedattempts at marginalization and demographic change.

Omar al-Karawi allegedthat his brother received a warning call from a political figure hours beforesecurity forces raided his residence, but refused to leave the country andexpressed willingness to appear before any investigative committee. “No moneyor incriminating documents were found during the operation,” he added,clarifying that security forces arrested his brother alongside two minorchildren.

He described the detention of minors as raising questions about theoperation's procedures. “No clear evidence of wrongdoing against the deputy hasbeen presented, and the matter has been characterized as ongoing before Iraqicourts.”

Iraqi authorities have arrested 21suspects as part of the nationwide Dawn Crackdown anti-corruption campaign,while security forces continue searching for additional suspects who remain atlarge, government spokesperson Haider Al-Aboudi announced on Monday.

Speaking at a news conference,Al-Aboudi said the investigation uncovered a network accused of embezzlingpublic funds after former Oil Ministry Undersecretary Adnan Al-Jumaili'sconfessions during the investigation pointed to the involvement of politicalfigures and lawmakers.

Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi hasdirected the Finance Ministry to establish a dedicated account for depositingmoney recovered from illicit enrichment cases, Al-Aboudi added, describing thecampaign, carried out in coordination with the Supreme Judicial Council and theIraqi Parliament, as unprecedented in recent years.

Al-Aboudi also dismissed any linkbetween the operation and the prime minister's planned visit to Washington nextmonth.

Former IraqiFinance Minister Taif Sami's office on Monday rejected reports that she hadfled Iraq or had been arrested as part of the country's anti-corruptioncampaign.

In astatement, the office described reports circulating on some media outlets andsocial media platforms as "completely false.” It urged mediaorganizations, analysts, and activists to verify information before publishingor sharing it and called on Iraq's Communications and Media Commission to takelegal action against the spread of misleading reports.

The office willalso pursue legal action against anyone who circulates the allegations withoutrelying on official sources.

The head of the Patriotic Shiite Movement (PSM), Muqtada al-Sadr, on Monday called for nationwide peaceful rallies after Friday prayers in support of Iraq's “heroic” anti-corruption campaign.

In a statement, he urged demonstrators to raise only Iraqi flags alongside banners depicting Imam Hussein bin Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and a revered figure in Shia Islam, as symbols of revolution against corruption.

Baghdad has escalated its anti-corruption drive, Iraqi Prime MinisterAli al-Zaidi stated on Sunday, framing the ongoing campaign as the initialphase of wider efforts to recover public funds and strengthen oversight acrossstate bodies.

During a cabinet session, al-Zaidi stressed that safeguarding nationalresources remains a core responsibility, pointing to years of conflict andinstability that have weakened the country’s institutions.

Iraq supports ending wars through dialogue and negotiations after the recent US-Iran agreement, Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi said on Sunday, during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Baghdad.

Al-Zaidi and Araghchi discussed the agreement between Iran and the United States, along with regional and international efforts to promote security, stability, and “respect for state sovereignty.”

Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s support for Iraq, continued coordination to strengthen bilateral relations, and commitment to building the strongest possible ties with regional countries and Arab neighbors.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, who is on a wider visit to Baghdad, also held talks with counterpart Fuad Hussein, Parliament Speaker Haibet Al-Halbousi, and President Nizar Amidi, whose office clarified that discussions focused on regional and international developments and efforts to spare the region further tension.

Iraq's Communications and MediaCommission (CMC) Appeals Council on Sunday rejected three appeals challengingdisciplinary measures imposed on TV presenter Mona Sami, Alawla TV, andpolitical analyst Issam Hussein.

In decisions signed by AppealsCouncil Chairman Judge Iyad Mohsen Dhamad, the body ruled that a program'smanagement and presenter bear legal responsibility for statements made byguests because they have the authority to intervene immediately and steerdiscussions back within professional standards.

It concluded that Sami's failure tointervene amounted to approval of, and participation in, broadcasting what itdescribed as "sectarian poison."

The council also found thatHussein's remarks sought to incite sectarian and religious divisions throughcontent that reportedly threatens civil peace and public order. Freedom ofexpression, it stressed, is not an absolute right but must be exercised withinlegal limits that protect social stability and public morals.

Iraq's Al-Azm Alliance on Sunday defended its leader,Muthanna Al-Samarrai, and several alliance lawmakers facing corruption-relatedcharges, urging political actors and media outlets not to prejudge the casewhile expressing confidence in the country's judiciary.

The investigation into former OilMinistry Undersecretary Adnan al-Jumaili uncovered the involvement of severalIraqi lawmakers in exploiting state resources and benefiting from governmentcontracts, an Iraqi investigative judge said on Sunday.

In a statement, Diaa Jaafar ofIraq's Central Criminal Court for Combating Corruption explained that the casebegan in October 2025 after the court received reports alleging that severalelection candidates had spent large sums on campaign activities using stateresources with the backing of influential figures in the previous government.

Months of evidence gatheringculminated in the exposure of lawmakers who, according to Jaafar, used publicresources for electoral campaigning and obtained commissions and personalbenefits, directly or through intermediaries, from government contracts.

The court subsequently requested thelifting of parliamentary immunity for the accused lawmakers, which Parliament'sspeaker approved under the applicable legal authorities. In coordination withthe Federal Integrity Commission and law enforcement agencies, arrest warrantswere executed, several suspects were detained, and funds and evidence linked tothe case were seized, while others remain at large.

The investigation is continuing, andlegal measures will be taken against additional political figures and otherindividuals.

Iraq's top Shiite religious authority reaffirmed its support for combating corruption, as the government presses ahead with what has become the country's largest anti-corruption campaign in years.

A source close to the Najaf religious establishment told Shafaq News on Sunday that Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani's position on corruption "has not changed," pointing to previous official statements that consistently called for fighting corruption and upholding the rule of law.

On Nov. 4, 2024, al-Sistani’s office noted that Iraq could achieve a better future only by appointing competent and honest officials, enforcing the rule of law, restricting weapons to state control, and combating corruption at all levels. In 2019, his representative in Karbala, Abdul Mahdi al-Karbalaei, said the religious authority had "grown hoarse" from repeatedly urging Iraqi leaders to confront corruption. Shortly afterward, the Najaf establishment ended its regular political Friday sermons and stopped receiving senior Iraqi officials.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi will discuss the release of roughly $30 billion in Iraqi funds held in the United States during an official visit to Washington next month, an informed source told Shafaq News on Sunday.

The visit will center on redefining the relationship between Baghdad and Washington “on a clear and comprehensive basis, alongside economic and investment files mutually beneficial to both sides.”

Among the visit's most prominent themes, the source added, is the release of one of Iraq's financial guarantees held in the United States, valued at about $30 billion. That sum would be enough to cover government spending, including salaries and allocations, for at least six months.

The release is also tied to efforts to address the fallout from the crisis at the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf shipping corridor through which much of the region's oil is exported, and to strengthen Iraqi oil exports through alternative outlets in neighboring countries by activating different transport lines to maximize state revenues.

Iraq holds a range of financial assets and guarantees abroad, some frozen and some held, the source said, adding that the government is working to release the frozen funds to bolster its strategic financial reserve.

A team from Iraq’s Federal Commission of Integrity, accompanied by itsinvestigative office in Kirkuk, took custody of several individuals wanted oncorruption-related charges, a security source told Shafaq News on Sunday.

The wanted suspects were arrested by security agencies in Erbil, thecapital of the Kurdistan Region, before being transferred to the Altun Kopricheckpoint in Kirkuk.

The number and identities of those detained remain undisclosed.

Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone remained closed on Sunday as Iraqi authorities tightened security during a widening anti-corruption operation targeting senior politicians, lawmakers, and officials, a senior source told Shafaq News.

Access to the Green Zone was restricted to holders of official security passes, while all vehicles entering and leaving the area were subject to enhanced inspections.

Authorities have also issued travel bans against several suspects pending the completion of ongoing investigations, the source added, dismissing reports that Baghdad International Airport had been closed.

The agency said 47 suspects had been arrested, including the head of the al-Azm Alliance and lawmaker Muthanna al-Samarrai, alongside several sitting members of parliament, former lawmakers, and senior government officials.

Earlier today, Iraq's Federal Integrity Commission said it had begun executing judicial arrest warrants against suspects accused of misusing public funds, describing the operation as the result of coordination between judicial, executive, and legislative authorities.

The arrests follow raids across Baghdad, including around the fortified Green Zone, as authorities expand investigations into alleged corruption, illicit enrichment, and misuse of public funds. Informed sources told Shafaq News the operation is expected to continue, with a second phase likely to target more senior figures.
