Electricity debt discount excludes KRI Runaki bills
Shafaq News- Erbil
A discount on outstanding electricity debts in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) applies only to bills accumulated before the Runaki (Light) project and does not cover the project’s monthly electricity bills, the KRI Electricity Ministry said on Sunday.
The ministry stated that monthly Runaki bills must be paid within 50 days of issuance. It added that fewer than 20 days remain for subscribers to benefit from the discount on debts accumulated before the project, urging them to settle their outstanding balances before the deadline.
Last week, the ministry said more than 90% of residents were receiving round-the-clock power through Runaki, while about 80% of subscribers, particularly low-income households, were paying less than they previously spent on public electricity and private generators combined.
In November 2024, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani launched the project to phase out dependence on private generators and provide reliable electricity. The government plans to extend 24-hour power to all homes, businesses, and commercial facilities across the KRI by the end of 2026.
