2025 Erbil Forum: Iraqi President urges constitutional integrity, regional stability

Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid underscored the need to uphold Iraq’s democratic system through constitutional adherence, justice, and equality, while reaffirming the country’s commitment to regional stability and diplomacy.
Speaking at the Third Erbil Forum, Rashid emphasized that Iraq’s progress hinges on a firm commitment to democratic principles and social justice. “There is no alternative to this path if we want our people to enjoy freedom, prosperity, and stability,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of unity, Rashid called for stronger ties between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), emphasizing that collaboration is essential for national progress. “Iraq is rich in its diverse ethnic and social makeup, as well as its vast natural resources,” he noted.
“Strengthening cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil benefits all.”
Despite stable global oil prices, Iraq continues to face significant financial challenges. Rashid pointed out to delays in funding allocations by the Ministry of Finance, which he said have stalled economic development and infrastructure projects.
“This issue is not only delaying economic growth and urban revival but also affecting the financing of key budget items, except for salaries,” he explained.
Reaffirming Iraq’s foreign policy stance, Rashid emphasized Baghdad’s commitment to balanced international relations and non-interference in other nations’ affairs. “Iraq respects the sovereignty of nations and the choices of their people,” he remarked.
“While we are capable of responding to any violations of our territorial integrity, our focus remains on diplomacy, dialogue, and bilateral agreements.”
Turning to broader regional concerns, Rashid warned that “Iraq is not immune” to the escalating instability in the Middle East. “For over a year, the region has faced continuous political, security, and military challenges that are reshaping geopolitical landscapes and posing security risks,” he noted.
The Iraqi President condemned the prolonged conflict in Palestine, calling for urgent humanitarian intervention and a lasting political resolution. “For nearly a year and a half, the Palestinian people have endured aggression, leading to a horrific humanitarian catastrophe,” he stated, urging an immediate ceasefire, increased humanitarian aid, international recognition of Palestinian self-determination, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
On Syria, Rashid signaled Iraq’s willingness to engage with its evolving leadership while maintaining a policy of non-interference. “We hope that changes in Syria will meet the aspirations of all ethnic, religious, and sectarian communities,” he said, stressing Baghdad’s commitment to fostering diplomatic relations based on mutual respect and sovereignty.
Earlier, the Iraqi President arrived in Erbil, where he was welcomed by Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani at Erbil International Airport.
