Mourinho starts Real Madrid return with late win

Real Madrid opened their LaLiga campaign with a dramatic 2-1 win at Espanyol on Saturday as Carlo Espi scored a 90th-minute winner on his competitive debut.

Jude Bellingham headed Madrid in front from Arda Guler’s cross in the ninth minute before Alex Calatrava equalised for Espanyol in the 30th.
Mourinho turned to his bench in search of a winner, and Espi struck 10 minutes after coming on to secure three points in the Portuguese coach’s first competitive match since returning to the club.
Mourinho began his second spell at Real Madrid this summer on a contract through June 30, 2029, having previously managed the club from 2010 to 2013.
Although the fixture was part of LaLiga’s second round, it was Madrid’s season opener after their match against Real Sociedad was postponed to August 26 because of players’ World Cup participation.
