Babil’s Provincial Council on Monday renamed Jurf Al-Nasr, one of Iraq’s most politically sensitive post-ISIS areas, as Madinat Al-Nasr, or “City of Victory.”

According to a Shafaq News correspondent, the council chose the new name to commemorate the area’s role in the victory over ISIS. Previously known as Jurf Al-Sakhar, it was renamed Jurf Al-Nasr after Iraqi forces and allied fighters retook it from the group in October 2014.

Located about 60 kilometers southwest of Baghdad and 13 kilometers north of Al-Musayyib, the area is crossed by orchards, drainage canals, and waterways and lies along routes linking the capital with Babil, Karbala, Najaf, and western Iraq. More than a decade after its recapture, over 100,000 displaced people remain unable to return.
