Security forces discovered explosive remnants of ISIS in two areas west of Nineveh province, northern Iraq, a security source told Shafaq News on Thursday.

A force discovered an improvised explosive device in farmland near the road linking Sinjar and Tal Afar districts, as Iraqi army engineering units from the 20th Division detonated the device on-site without causing damage or injuries.

In a separate incident, another force discovered an unidentified rocket in Baaj district. Nineveh’s explosives disposal unit removed the rocket safely, with no damage reported.

Earlier this week, an official told our agency that flooding in Iraq has displaced explosive remnants from known contaminated zones into new areas, heightening risks to civilians.

Landmines and unexploded ordnance continue to pose a serious threat in Iraq, with the Strategic Center for Human Rights in Iraq estimating more than 6,600 square kilometers of land contaminated since 2003 and over 30,000 people killed or injured nationwide. Decades of wars and the fight against ISIS have left explosive remnants that are often re-exposed by heavy rains, flooding, and soil erosion.
