Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said Wednesday that the American University of Iraq–Sulaimani (AUIS) has become a symbol of academic freedom and excellence in Iraq, praising its role in promoting innovation and modern education.
Speaking at AUIS’s 14th graduation ceremony, attended by political, academic, and diplomatic figures, Barzani highlighted the inauguration of the Petraeus Artificial Intelligence Lab as a milestone in scientific research and technological progress in Kurdistan.
He described the new AI lab, which operates in the Kurdish language, as a “qualitative leap” that strengthens Kurdish culture and science within the global academic and technological community.
Barzani emphasized that education and human development are pillars of Kurdistan’s growth, noting that “investing in people is the smartest and most rewarding investment.” He added that AUIS exemplifies how open, globally connected education can drive constructive change across Iraq.
The Kurdish president welcomed General David Petraeus, former Multi-National Security Transition Command—Iraq and the NATO Training Mission—Iraq who received an honorary doctorate during the ceremony, and expressed gratitude for his enduring support. “Naming this lab after him is not just symbolic—it reflects the deep appreciation of the Kurdish people for a friend who stood with us in difficult times.”
