Celebrations marking the Prophet Muhammad’s Mawlid (birthday) began in Al-Sulaymaniyah, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, drawing large crowds to mosques and several streets across the city on Saturday.
Sheikh Barham Sarchnari, imam of the Grand Sarchnar Mosque,
told Shafaq News that the mosque, founded in 1959, held a large gathering
attended by Muslims from different communities, sects, and ethnic groups. The
event featured a dinner for more than 1,500 people, among them people in need,
as well as religious activities and poetry honoring the Prophet.
He said Muslims around the world observe Mawlid each year, describing the occasion as promoting love, compassion, and unity.
Al-Sulaymaniyah holds annual celebrations in mosques, neighborhoods, and markets, including religious gatherings, devotional songs, communal meals, and assistance for people in need.
