Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, has faced more than 500 drone attacks since Middle East tensions intensified, Governor Omed Khoshnaw disclosed on Thursday, urging Baghdad to take decisive action and allocate emergency funds to compensate those affected.

During a press conference, Khoshnaw pointed to a steady rise in damage linked to the attacks, which he noted originate from areas beyond the Region’s control. He further outlined ongoing consultations between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and federal authorities; however, “no legal, military, or administrative steps have been taken by Baghdad to curb the violations,” a position he described as concerning.

Since February 28, a wave of attacks has swept across the Kurdistan Region, striking a broad array of targets —from US diplomatic facilities and bases linked to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups to sites affiliated with the KRG’s Ministry of Peshmerga, as well as oil fields, communication networks, residential neighborhoods, and public infrastructure.

The US-based Community Peacemaker Teams documented 474 attacks, including 179 attributed to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and 295 to Iran-aligned groups, leaving at least 14 people dead and 93 others injured.
