Barzani calls EU to be more engaged to help Syrian refugees

“ Barzani has received on Wednesday evening , a delegation from the European Union that included the Commissioner of the European international cooperation , humanitarian assistance and follow-up crises , Kristalina Georgieva and Ambassador of the European Union to Iraq , Hapaschkova and their delegation accompanying ,” A statement by the prime ministry reportedly for " Shafaq News”.

The statement said that the European delegation stressed that its visit to Iraq and Kurdistan Region comes to check on the status of Syrian refugees in Kurdistan Region and Iraq , expressing its thanks and appreciation to the Government of Kurdistan Region for their interest in these refugees , and that the assistance provided by KRG to the refugees.

The statement added that the delegation renewed making more efforts in the European Union in order not to deprive Syrian refugees in the region of the aid provided by the international community , to assist the Government of the region to provide the best services to refugees regarding the difficult circumstances that faces the region and the problems of the economic budget crisis .

For his part, Barzani called according to the statement , the delegation to conduct meetings with the relevant authorities in KRG of governors and ministers to discuss the management mechanism for Refugees, stressing that his government will do its best to continue to help the refugees .

The statement noted that the situation , the Iraqi arena and the process of the upcoming elections in the country was another aspect of the meeting .

According to local and international reports , Kurdistan Region is hosting about 250 000 Syrian refugees distributed on camps in its three provinces, in addition to the preparation while others are living with relatives in the region .
