Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, informed Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that Iraq will not stand by idly in the face of the serious consequences in Syria.

According to a statement by the PM’s media office, Al-Sudani held a phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, focusing on the latest security and field developments in Syria and the region.

"The Prime Minister informed President Erdoğan that Iraq will not just stand by in the face of the grave repercussions unfolding in Syria, particularly acts of ethnic cleansing targeting various components and sects", the PM’s media office announced.

"He emphasized that Iraq has previously suffered from terrorism and the outcomes of extremist groups taking control of areas in Syria, and it will not allow such a scenario to be repeated. He reaffirmed the importance of respecting Syria’s unity and sovereignty and stressed Iraq’s commitment to exerting all efforts to maintain its own security and that of Syria", the statement added.

He further stressed that Muslim countries do not need internal divisions and that the current situation in Syria serves the interests of the Israeli state, “which has deliberately targeted Syrian army sites, paving the way for terrorist groups to seize more territory”. Additionally, he pointed out that these groups have not supported the Palestinian people nor condemned the aggression in Gaza, it revealed.

According to a statement from the Turkish presidency, President Erdogan emphasized to PM Al-Sudani that “Türkiye's priority is to maintain calm along its borders and avoid harm to civilians. He reaffirmed Türkiye's commitment to Syria’s unity, stability, and territorial integrity, highlighting alignment with Iraq on this matter.”

The Turkish president further stressed the need for the Syrian regime to engage in a genuine political process to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

He also noted that “Türkiye has taken and will continue to take measures to prevent the PKK and its affiliates from exploiting developments, in line with Türkiye's national security and interests,” the statement mentioned.
