Iraq is looking to build closer energy cooperation with Saudi Arabia, Oil Minister Bassem al-Abadi said on Friday, casting stronger ties with Riyadh as part of a broader effort to deepen Baghdad's relations across the region.

In a statement, Al-Abadi said his visit focused on cooperation in gas, energy and electricity, as well as potential joint projects. He added that both sides agreed to strengthen bilateral ties and maintain high-level coordination.

Iraq, under Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, is working to diversify its energy and export options as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz restricts crude shipments. On Monday, Al-Zaidi ordered oil companies to operate around the clock to sustain production and boost exports, while pressing officials to accelerate pipeline upgrades and develop alternative routes to reduce the country’s dependence on Hormuz.
